Be Personal, Get More Sales
There is a lot of hype about social media these days - Twitter, Facebook and Linked-in. These vehicles are tools that can help you reach more people and leverage contacts, but they do not replace personal contact.
Remember: For Significant Purchases People buy from People!
You should use social media to leverage your contacts and to reach potential prospects, but you must stay personally engaged with your ideal customers and prospects. In these times it is especially important to:
- Know what you offer and who is your “ideal customer” Do you provide a service or product that is unique? Make sure you know who the best prospect is for your product or service. For example, if you make left-handed super-sharp scissors, then the pursuit of left-handed precision artists would make a lot of sense.
- Focus on customers and prospects that are a good fit for your offerings You will gain a greater return on your time and marketing dollars spent, if the prospects you are pursuing need your offerings and can afford them. A “spray and pray’ approach to sales and marketing is very expensive and generally results in little return.
- Stay abreast of what your “ideal customers” are worried about Do you know what keeps them awake at night? What are your customer’s major issues? Is there an event that has caused them to think or act differently. For example, when you have a security breach on your network you are more likely to be very interested in security solutions.
- Look to help resolve worries – not sell “stuff” Do your offerings help your customers win new customers or solve major problems? People will act quicker to resolve headaches versus spending time to address nice-to-have issues.
- Stay in constant contact and be memorable. It takes many touches before a prospect is ready to buy (some statistics suggest that over 10 touches are required before a reasonable sales discussion occurs). Our recommend is
- be memorable – personalize your messages and make them relevant
- don’t solely rely upon an email - a multi-media approach is more effective
- pick up the phone - have a conversation
